Weekend 3 - Bira Beach and a few of the Indonesia 3 Team

Four of us, Jess (USA, Rochester MN), Vivek (India), Sabine (Austria), and myself were planning to leave on Friday night for a 5 hour drive, in a rented car & driver, to Bira Indonesia. Originally, more of the team was thinking of going, but decided to tour more of the City of Makassa. Bira is a resort area on the south east corner of Salwesi Island.  Due to the demonstrations over fuel costs increased, in the City of Makassa, we were not allowed to leave until Saturday Morning.  We left at 05:30 in the morning.  The drive was only about 120 miles, but due to the road conditions, some paved, some not paved, some in need of pot hole filling, we got there at around 10:30.  We immediately sat down and had a few Bintangs (Indonesia beers) and decided what to do.
The worst part of the road to Bira Beach . . . all 40 miles of it.
We arrive and were impressed with the local and accommodations.
The manger of the hotel, called a guy from the island across the strait to come pick up in a boat for snorkeling, lunch on his island (and it was his island, he was the mayor or something).  A tour of one of the small island villages and more snorkeling.  He even climbed up a coconut tree and got us green coconuts he cut open. We drank the juice and ate the meat.  It was nothing like a coconut from the store.
Snorkeling and on the boat with our guide, the Mayor of the Island across from the resort.
After we got back it was time to relax with more Bintang, then watch the sunset. We all agreed this would be a place to come back to Indonesia for with our family's.  After getting cleaned up we all sat out under the open air veranda restaurant and had dinner.

I went to bed early to read, but it was decided we would get up at 05:30 to see the sun rise.  It wasn't as spectacular as the sun set, but it was relaxing walking on the beach and taking photo's.

We had a nice breakfast on the veranda and then went snorkeling off the beach till it was time to get ready and leave.  It was only about 26 hours at the resort, but it felt like we'd been there longer. It was now time for our 5 hour trip back . . . but it was worth it to relax and be out of the city. #ibmcsc
